Moving costs and choosing a mover

The biggest costs of moving to Fort Lauderdale are usually not the truck. Deposits, the first month of housing, vehicle registration and storm-season insurance add up quickly. The table above shows typical monthly housing costs; this section covers the one-off costs.

Moving within Florida

For an in-state move, get at least three written estimates and ask whether each is binding. Check reviews and complaints, and if you are moving into a condo or apartment tower, ask the building management whether it requires a certificate of insurance from the mover and a booked elevator slot. If you already own a Florida homestead, read the portability note below before you sell, because any transfer of your tax benefit is claimed on the new home's application.

Moving from another state

For an interstate move, use the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's registered mover database to check the company, and know whether you are dealing with a mover or a broker. Interstate movers are required to give you FMCSA's Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move booklet and Ready to Move brochure before the move, so ask for them if they do not arrive. Moving between June and November, you are also moving in hurricane season, so leave slack in the schedule.

Costs people forget

  • A $225 initial registration fee on each vehicle not previously registered in Florida, set by state law, plus title and plate fees.
  • First month's rent and deposit: Zillow's typical rent was $2,736 in August 2026.
  • Utility deposits and connection fees. The City of Fort Lauderdale lists new service charges on its fee schedule.
  • Hurricane supplies, and for owners, shutters or impact protection if the home has none.
  • Condo move-in fees and application fees, set by each association.

A Fort Lauderdale moving timeline

Two to three months before

Decide on an area, using our Fort Lauderdale neighborhoods guide, and get insurance quotes on any home you are considering before making an offer. If you are buying a condo, request the association documents now.

One month before

Book movers and, if moving into a building, the elevator. Arrange FPL service and, if you own the home, the city water account. Collect school records if you are enrolling children.

Moving week

Confirm utility start dates, keep important documents with you, and photograph the home's condition on arrival. If a storm is forecast, follow Broward County's instructions before anything else.

First 10 days

Sign up for Alert FTL and Alert!Broward emergency alerts, look up your evacuation plan, and start the vehicle title and registration process with the Broward County Tax Collector.

First 30 days

Get your Florida driver license. Under state law, a new resident who takes a job or enrolls children in school must get a Florida license within 30 days if they drive. Register to vote at your new address.

By March 1

If you own and live in the home on January 1, file for homestead with the Broward County Property Appraiser by March 1. Missing it can cost hundreds of dollars a year.

Setting up utilities in Fort Lauderdale

Electricity: Florida Power & Light

FPL supplies electricity in Fort Lauderdale. Its typical residential bill for 1,000 kWh was $136.64 in August 2026 and $128.45 in September, when a one-month storm refund applied. Start service online a couple of weeks before moving in, and ask about any deposit.

Water and sewer: City of Fort Lauderdale

The city runs water and sewer for most addresses in its limits. Since March 1, 2026, only property owners can open a new utility account; tenants can receive bills in care of the owner. New service needs a Utility Service Application and Agreement, sent by email to UtilityBilling@fortlauderdale.gov, by fax, or in person at 700 NW 19th Avenue. The city's example bill for 5,000 gallons a month is $116.79 after a 9% increase on October 1, 2025. Card payments carry a merchant fee of $1.95 to 2.95%; ACH does not.

Managing the city account

Once the account is open, the city's customer self-service site at utilitybilling.fortlauderdale.gov lets you view and pay bills at any time, switch to paperless e-billing, schedule payments, set up autopay by card or bank draft, pay by text and get email or text reminders. Utility Billing customer service is on (954) 828-5150. Setting up autopay by bank draft avoids the card merchant fee.

Trash and recycling

Single-family sanitation is billed by the city; the FY2026 rate for one cart is $52.49, up 5%, with further 5% steps planned each year to FY2030. Multi-family and commercial properties are on a separate rate table in the same schedule.

Fire and stormwater charges

These are not on the utility bill. The city's fire assessment and stormwater fee, $318.17 per residential unit in 2025, appear on the annual property tax bill. Buyers should read the back of the last bill to see them.

Internet and phone

Providers vary by building and street, so check which ones serve your address before signing a lease. MIT's Broward budget allows about $170 a month for internet and mobile for one adult.

Driver license, vehicle registration and voting

In Broward, driver license and vehicle services are handled by the Broward County Tax Collector, whose motor vehicle office is at 1800 NW 66th Avenue, Suite 101, in Plantation.

Driver license within 30 days

Bring proof of identity, your Social Security number and two proofs of Florida residential address, such as a lease, utility bill dated within 60 days, mortgage statement or bank statement. From February 6, 2026, all Florida knowledge and driving tests are given in English only, with no interpreters or translation devices. Book an appointment in advance.

Vehicle title and registration

Title and register your vehicle in Florida after you establish residency. The state charges a $225 fee on the initial registration of a vehicle not previously registered in Florida, on top of title and plate fees. Ask the tax collector's office which documents to bring for your vehicle before your visit.

Renewals and address changes

Once you have a Florida license, you may be able to renew online if your current card was issued in person, is REAL ID compliant and has no holds. The tax collector's DASH mobile units also handle renewals, replacements and address changes by appointment for Broward residents, and accept only card payments.

Voter registration

Register at your new address with the Broward County Supervisor of Elections or through the state's online voter registration system. A Florida voter registration number is one of the documents the property appraiser may ask for when you apply for homestead.

Filing for homestead in Broward County

Who qualifies and when

You must own the home and make it your permanent residence by January 1, then file Form DR-501 with the Broward County Property Appraiser by March 1 of that year. A home bought in, say, June 2026 can first get the exemption for 2027.

What to bring

The Department of Revenue's PT-113 lists proofs an appraiser may ask for, including a Florida driver license, Florida vehicle registration, voter registration, a declaration of domicile, your employer, the address on your last tax return and proof of utility payments at the home. Getting your license and tag first makes filing simpler.

What it is worth

Up to $51,411 for 2026: $25,000 off all taxes and a second, inflation-indexed $26,411 off non-school taxes on value above $50,000. At Fort Lauderdale's 2025 rates that saves about $769 a year on a home assessed at $423,492, and it caps future assessment increases under Save Our Homes. See our Broward County property tax guide.

Your first tax bill

Taxes for the year you buy are usually prorated between buyer and seller at closing. Broward bills are mailed November 1 and due by March 31, with a 4% discount for paying in November. If you would rather pay in stages, enroll in the tax collector's installment plan between November 1 and April 30 for the following year.

Portability and the 2026 ballot

If you are moving from another Florida homestead, you may be able to transfer part of your Save Our Homes benefit; file the portability form with your application. If Amendment 3 passes in November 2026, people who were not Florida residents on December 31, 2026 would get the current exemption first and the larger one from their fifth year.

Hurricane preparation for new residents

Know your evacuation plan

Broward County orders evacuations by plan. Its hurricane site says people in low-lying areas or next to tidal waters should seek shelter elsewhere if conditions warrant, and all mobile home residents must evacuate under Plan A and Plan B. Check where your address falls as soon as you move in.

Sign up for alerts

Register for Alert FTL from the City of Fort Lauderdale and Alert!Broward from the county. Broward's hurricane dashboard lists shelter locations and whether each allows pets.

Plan, kit and guide

Download Broward's official hurricane preparedness guide and the city's pages on making a plan and building a kit. If you live in a high-rise, the city publishes an all-hazards high-rise evacuation plan. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.

Shelters and pets

Broward's dashboard showed 35 shelter locations when we checked, mostly schools, each marked as pet friendly or not. In Fort Lauderdale the list includes Arthur Ashe/Rock Island (Atlantic Technical College). If you have pets, note which shelters accept them before the season starts.

Check your insurance before a storm

Buy homeowners, renters and flood cover well before a storm, and ask your insurer whether it stops writing or changing policies once a storm threatens. Fort Lauderdale residents get a 20% discount on National Flood Insurance Program premiums through the city's Community Rating System participation. See our Florida hurricane insurance guide.

Getting around once you arrive

Rail: Brightline and Tri-Rail

Brightline's Fort Lauderdale station is at 101 NW 2nd Avenue downtown, with trains to Miami, Aventura, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach and Orlando and a 24-hour parking garage. Tri-Rail commuter trains also serve the city. Both are worth testing before you choose where to live if you will work in Miami or Palm Beach.

The airport

Brightline runs a shuttle between its downtown station and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport terminals from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., priced at $12 per person plus a $3 fuel surcharge.

Driving

Most residents drive. The Census Bureau's 2024 survey puts the average one-way commute at about 25 minutes for city workers and about 30 minutes across Broward. Drive your likely commute at rush hour before signing a lease or contract.

Enrolling in Broward County schools

Find the assigned school

Broward County Public Schools' Find My School tool gives the assigned school for a street address and grade. Zoning is by address, so check the exact home before you sign; we do not state school zones.

Documents to enroll

Proof of residence, such as a property tax bill, homestead receipt, deed, mortgage statement, notarized lease or a purchase contract closing within 30 days; proof of age; a medical exam within the 12 months before first enrolling in Florida; and a Florida Certificate of Immunization, Form DH 680.

School choice

Broward runs a school choice program with its own applications and deadlines, separate from your assigned school. Check the district's school choice pages early if you are moving mid-year.
