A Windermere search usually spans three kinds of places: the small historic town between Lake Down and Lake Butler, gated golf and lake communities in unincorporated Orange County, and newer subdivisions in and around Horizon West. Incorporated in 1925 and founded in 1887 by John Dawe, who named it after the lake in England's Lake District, the town covers 2.69 square miles on an isthmus between Lake Down and Lake Butler.
