South Lake Morton and East Lake Morton
South Lake Morton Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 20, 1985. It is bounded by Lake Morton Drive and Palmetto Street, Ingraham Avenue, Johnson Avenue, Frank Lloyd Wright Way, Belmar Street and Tennessee Avenue, and contains 557 historic buildings built between about 1900 and 1942. Most are Arts and Crafts bungalows, with Victorian, Queen Anne and Spanish Revival homes mixed in.
East Lake Morton Residential District was listed on July 9, 1993. It is bounded by Orange Street, Ingraham Avenue, Palmetto Street, Lake Morton Drive and Massachusetts Avenue, and contains 215 historic buildings.
Most homes in both districts date from the Florida land boom of the early 1920s. The Lake Morton Neighborhood Association hosts an annual historic home and garden tour.
Life around the lake
Lake Morton is where Lakeland's swans are most visible. They descend from a pair given to the city by Queen Elizabeth II in 1957, which is why Lakeland is called the Swan City. The lake also draws pelicans, ducks and other birds. The Lakeland Public Library and the Polk Museum of Art sit near the lake, downtown is a short walk away, and Florida Southern College and Lake Hollingsworth are just to the south.
That walkable setting is the main difference from most of Lakeland, which is built around driving.
