How Palmer Ranch came about
The land traces back to Bertha Palmer, who came to Sarasota in 1910 and bought large holdings in the area. Hugh Culverhouse bought 12,000 acres of the remaining land in 1972, and Palmer Ranch was established as a development of regional impact in December 1984. Today it is a census-designated place of about 6,733 acres with 14,966 residents at the 2020 census.
The Palmer Ranch Master Association maintains common grounds, parks and landscaping. It describes the area as more than 90 subdivisions, apartment communities and assisted living facilities.
Neighborhoods inside Palmer Ranch
The master association lists more than 30 residential communities. Among them are Arbor Lakes, Deer Creek, Esplanade, Hammock Preserve, Huntington Pointe, Isles of Sarasota, Legacy Estates, Marbella, Mira Lago, Prestancia, Promenade, Stoneybrook, Turtle Rock and Village Walk. They range from villa and condo communities to golf and gated enclaves.
Prestancia is the best-known gated section. TPC Prestancia, created by the PGA Tour in 1985, has 36 holes on 565 acres inside the gated community. The Legacy Trail's first section, from Venice to Palmer Ranch, opened in 2008. The trail now runs 18.5 miles and reaches downtown Sarasota near Fruitville Road.
