Sarasota sits on Sarasota Bay with barrier islands just offshore: Lido Key is inside the city and linked by the John Ringling Causeway, and Siesta Key lies partly within the city limits. Tampa is a big-city downtown at the head of Tampa Bay, with beaches across the bay. The size difference is large: 58,458 residents in Sarasota against 413,554 in Tampa.
City size and growth
The two cities sit in different leagues. The Census Bureau estimated 58,458 residents in the City of Sarasota in July 2025, up from 54,850 at the April 2020 base, a gain of about 6.6%. Tampa grew from 385,336 to 413,554, about 7.3%. The metro areas show the same contrast: the two-county Sarasota metro has an estimated 935,000 residents, while the Tampa Bay metro has more than 3.4 million. In practice that means a much smaller job market around Sarasota, as the BLS figures above show, and a bigger city with more of everything around Tampa.
