Where Arlington is
Arlington covers most of Jacksonville east and south of the St. Johns River, west of the Intracoastal Waterway and north of the Arlington River and Southside. It overlaps with Southside at its southern end, around Beach Boulevard. The city groups it with the beaches inside the city limits as the Greater Arlington/Beaches planning district.
Bridges shaped it. The Mathews Bridge, opened in 1953, carries the Arlington Expressway to downtown, and the Dames Point Bridge, finished in 1989, links Arlington to the Northside. Atlantic Boulevard, completed in 1910, runs through Arlington from San Marco to the beaches.

What the homes are like
Most of Arlington was built out after the Mathews Bridge opened, when it grew faster than any other part of Jacksonville for about two decades. Sandalwood, begun in 1960 midway between downtown and the beaches, is one of the planned subdivisions from that period. Arlington is known for mid-century modern houses, including homes by local architects Robert C. Broward, Taylor Hardwick and William Morgan.
