Safest neighborhoods in Jacksonville: how to read the official crime data for any address

Lists of the safest neighborhoods usually combine crime counts with population estimates and their own weighting, and the methods are rarely published in full. Neighborhood names in Jacksonville also have loose, overlapping boundaries, and the official crime data isn't published by neighborhood name. A single label for a whole area can hide big differences between streets.

Where Jacksonville's official crime data comes from

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is the police agency for the consolidated City of Jacksonville. It runs a public Transparency Portal that combines its crime data and crime mapping, and it says the data is updated daily. The portal includes:

• A crime data dashboard showing offenses reported to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement under the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), year to date.
• A crime and traffic crash map where you can search around an address.
• NIBRS offense definitions and links to FDLE's incident-based data.
• Open data on topics such as homicides and calls for service.

JSO divides the city into six patrol districts and has a map tool to find the district and substation for an address.

What JSO's 2026 year-to-date numbers show

These figures come from JSO's public crime data dashboard as viewed on September 25, 2026. They are year-to-date counts, so the 2024 and 2025 figures cover the same part of each year.

By category, 45% of 2026 offenses were property crimes, 26% were crimes against persons, 11% were crimes against society and 18% were Group B offenses. Year-to-date offenses in each of the six patrol districts ranged from about 7.8k to 8.5k.

Those district totals look similar, but they are raw counts, not rates. Districts differ in population, land area and the amount of commercial property, so a count doesn't tell you the risk on a particular residential street.

How to check crime around a specific home

1. Open the JSO crime map from the Transparency Portal and search the property address.
2. Set a sensible radius and period. A few blocks and the last 12 months tells you more than a whole district over one month.
3. Filter by offense type. A cluster of shoplifting reports at a shopping center means something different from burglaries on residential streets.
4. Look at where incidents are recorded. Reports are often logged at businesses, hospitals, transit stops or major roads, which can make a nearby corridor look busier than the streets behind it.
5. Compare like with like. Check two or three homes you're considering over the same period, using the same filters.
6. Look at traffic too. JSO's dashboard showed 126 traffic fatalities in 2026 year to date, against 123 at the same point in 2025. The crash map can show problem intersections on your commute.

Beach cities and nearby counties use other data sources

JSO's six patrol districts are within the City of Jacksonville. Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach kept their own municipal governments when the city and county consolidated in 1968, so check which agency serves an address there before you rely on JSO's figures. Homes in St. Johns, Clay and Nassau counties fall under their own sheriff's offices or city police.

For statewide comparisons, FDLE publishes Florida's crime reports. Its last annual summary report covers 2021, because the FBI stopped collecting summary data after 2020 and Florida agencies moved to incident-based reporting. That change means older and newer figures aren't directly comparable.

• Visit in the evening and on a weekend, not just during a weekday showing.
